The Band Rider

Ahhh, the famous “rider”: a list of requirements to be provided backstage for a band or artist. The rider can be something sensible such as bottled water but can sometimes be highly outlandish. Riders have been known to include:

  • a monkey (for The Bloodhound Gang)
  • Flintstones vitamins (for Christina Aguilera)
  • “Corn on the cob: fresh ears, cooked 3 minutes only” (for Aerosmith)
  • 15 magnums of Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque champagne (for Pharrell Williams).

…then there’s the large supply of serviettes for P Diddy….which had to have his name printed on them. Nothing else would do.

The “rider diva” award must go to Mariah “I don’t do stairs” Carey. Some of her demands have included bunny rabbits, puppies, and kittens to keep her company backstage, Cristal champagne, a box of bendy straws to sip it with, and a special attendant to take care of all her needs.

The A52s’ rider on the other hand is simple and straightforward. We go for 5 pints of bitter, a large bag of ready salted crisps and a bag of dry roasted peanuts. It’s a rounded energy meal all in one package. This rider has become a staple diet for the band, keeping them in tip top condition for those gruelling gigs. Many a time, you will see The A52s gathered round a table, each with a ceremonial pint and a crisp ‘n’ nuts centrepiece – especially in The Sycamore!

We also like Smarties…but only the red ones.

The game has two added advantages –

1). You can add as many dots as you like.

2). You can eat the Crispinoes.

  3. […] wonder then, that over a pint of Double Hop and a dish of crispinoes, the band decided to embark on a great adventure. A plan was hatched to sail up this great road, […]
